Discover the troglodytic city of La Roque
Saint-Christophe in the Dordogne
La Roque Saint-Christophe: The prehistory and history of a troglodytic site unique in the world.
Remarkable for its powerful forms, the number of its habitats and the age of its human occupation, Roque Saint-Christophe is nestled in a wild setting of rare beauty.
It’s a veritable wall of limestone,a kilometre long and 80 metres high! Eroded by the river Vézère and frost over thousands of years, around a hundred rock shelters have been carved out of its aerial terraces.
These natural caves have been occupied by man since prehistoric times, then developed into a fort and a troglodytic city from the Middle Ages to the early Renaissance.

La Roque Saint-Christophe,
a family story
The year is 1938, and it’s been 350 years since the Roque Saint-Christophe was occupied by man. The vegetation has reclaimed its rights and the cliff is in a deep slumber… Gabriel Touron, a passionate Périgord native, accompanied by his wife Juliette, was to awaken the stone giant and embark on a titanic task to uncover this priceless human heritage! Following in Gabriel and Juliette’s footsteps, their descendants took up the torch, giving birth to a long family adventure.

Our commitmentExcellent visit (first one about ten years ago), always enjoyable. We’re rediscovering the splendid view. Even on a busy weekend, there was no waiting time at the entrance, and a self-guided tour is perfect for children. Explanatory booklets for adults and children.
We went there as a couple several years ago, and now we’re going back with our children, aged 2 and 4. Despite the crowds, parking was easy and there were plenty of picnic tables on the waterside. Admission is around €11 for adults and free for children under 8. A very interesting place to visit, steeped in history. On this long weekend, a period camp was set up with entertainment. Don’t forget to bring good shoes, as this area is sure to delight young and old alike.
We had a great time and were even able to bring our Golden along, who thoroughly enjoyed the visit!
Great discoveries about the history of the Dordogne, life in the roque, … We recommend the guided tour, which is very interesting. Jeremy’s fascinating explanations transported and captivated us. The demonstration of lifting equipment is an added bonus for an immersive visit.
Magnificent with a lovely panorama. We didn’t take the guided tour as our little one was very energetic and we didn’t want to disturb anyone. However, the explanations of the “signs” and the video are very complete. We had a great welcome from a very nice young man with a great sense of humour. We really enjoyed it.
